Who Are We and Who Have We Been?, 2025, salvaged chair, drapes and sheets, fabric scraps, stuffing, thread and acrylic paint on hinged wooden stretchers, 108” x 140” x 48” Installation at Lamplight AVL in Asheville, NC, May 2025. Made possible by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant.
In the wake of the disaster of Hurricane Helene and subsequent forest fires in Western North Carolina and LA, as well as the horrors of war, fascism and climate change, the piece examines symbols of nature, primarily those derived from folk art, past and present, and what they can show us about the formation of identity and of quiet resistance.
